With the spat of raindrops on tarpaper Nellie’s first reaction was irritation. Now he’d nag, say she never listened, say she shouldn’t be so cranky, then the horrible words, “I told you so Nellie.”
The wind whipped the trees and whistled through holes in the walls. Lightening speared the gap under the door, followed instantly by the crack of dark noise. She’d hold on, wait until it passed. It was a spring storm, a sudden fury.
Drips plopped onto the floor, already water trickled down the walls. She was recovering from bronchitis and shouldn’t risk a chill. That’s why Harold had been snippy. He meant well, “Don’t go Nellie, make do here, don’t be a fusser.”
Never, in all her long life had she done that. She had pride and wasn’t going to compromise now.
“The sun’s shining now but the clouds are building. The wind’s coming. Don’t go out. Listen to me woman.” The last had been the final straw.
She’d stomped out of the house in temper without her shawl or stick. Well, she was getting her comeuppance now wasn’t she?
She pushed the great door, leaned against it, arms straining, shoulders bunching, but the wind blew straight onto the little building. It wouldn’t shift, she gasped, felt her heart start to pound, dizziness hit her. She turned and leaned her back against it, desperate.
The storm was howling fury, a corner of roof lifted. The icy wind threw searing water onto her head. She squealed, slumping to the floor. Her legs shook; she was weaker than she’d thought. The roof flapped and slapped, the old building was crumbling before the spring storm, trapping her.
She straightened, old back creaking and complaining, wrinkled hands clawing at the walls.
Then she heard him, “Nellie, I’m coming, hold on old girl.” Moments later the door creaked open. There he stood, her silly old husband, thin hair whipped and torn by the blast, gnarly old hands clutching a sack around his shoulders.
He thrust the shawl towards her. Letting go his piece of sacking he helped to tuck it around her. “Come on you daft old thing, hang on to me.” She did, clinging to his arms, thin and wasted, but strong enough to hold her against the squall.
Slipping on gleaming flagstones they struggled to the house. She fell once and he bent to raise her up. She looked into his eyes and the fierce love she saw took what little breath she had left. For one moment in the midst of the deluge she let her soul go to him, in spite of it all she was his, would be until her last gasp. They sparred and niggled and sometimes tore at each other but he’d come through the storm to bring her home.
Safe in the house he was the first to speak. “Nellie, promise me something.”
“Aye love, anything, what is it?”
“Promise me before next winter we’ll have one of them new-fangled inside lavvies.”
My opinion for this story it had me giggling at the end but was also touching and powerful.

Review The Hunger Games chapter 20-27

Chapter 20:
The chapter opens with Katniss feeding Peeta the broth. That night when Katniss slips into the same sleeping bag as Peeta (it’s really cold), she notices how hot he really is, and wonders what to do about his fever. The next morning Katniss went looking for some food. Katniss comes back to a worried Peeta, who was afraid that the District 2 tributes had found her. They play up the Romance a bit, then Peeta forces Katniss to get some sleep.
Katniss wakes up in the afternoon, and checks Peeta’s leg wound. She is horrified to see that it is much worse, and that he has blood poisoning, which will kill him if unchecked. Katniss cooks them a meal down by the stream, and comes back to see how miserable Peeta is. To ease Peeta and take his mind off things, Katniss tells him the story of how Prim got her goat. After she finishes the story, the trumpets blare and Templesmith’s voice blares out over the arena, and as Katniss expected he is inviting everyone to a feast. Katniss is about to dismiss his offer, but he says that a backpack will be waiting for each district that contains something that they each desperately need.
Peeta automatically tells Katniss that she can’t go, and risk her life for him. Katniss trys to lie to Peeta telling him that she wasn’t planning on going, but he sees right throught it. She then tells him that she is going whether he likes it or not. Peeta is determined to go with her even though he can barely walk.
Katniss decides to go wash up down the stream, and as she is lost in thought a parachute fall down with a little vial. She is hoping that it is medicine, but quickly realizes that it is sleep syrup. Haymitch sent this to her so that she can knock Peeta out enough for her to go to the feast. She mixes sleep syrup in with some berries, and then feeds it to him. Peeta realizes what is in the berries, but it is to late because he ate them and is already starting to loose consciousness. End of chapter.

Chapter 21:
The Chapter opens with Katniss preparing to go to the feast, and she is camoflouging the cave in order to protect Peeta. She knows that Cato, Clove, and Thresh will be at the feast. As Katniss waits to go to the feast, she thinks of her family.
A few hours later she leaves for the feast, but she makes sure to kiss Peeta goodbye. Katniss reaches the Cornucopia, and is wondering where everybody is at. Katniss watches as the ground under the Cornucopia, and a round table with backpacks sitting there in all its’ glory. Just as the table clicks, Foxface dashes out, snatches her backpack, and quickly retreats. Katniss realizes that she has to go now before someone snatches up her bag. She sprints for the table, and hears the first knife coming towards her, but deflects it with her bow. Katniss draws her arrow, and shoot Clove right in the heart, but Clove turns and it hits her upper arm. Katniss is at the table, and she snatches up the backpack. As she turns around, the second knife creates a gash right above her eyebrow, and Clove slams into her.
Katniss tries to trick Clove into thinking that Peeta is alive and hunting Cato. Clove is straddling Katniss as she takes out a knife, and taunting her by bringing up Rue’s death. Just as Clove puts the knife to Katniss’ face, a great force pulls Clove away from Katniss. Katniss looks to see that Clove is dangling in Thresh’s arms.
Thresh is enraged with Clove because he thinks that she killed Rue because Clove had mentioned her just a while ago. Clove calls out to Cato, and responds to it. Thresh hits Clove with hard with a rock, and Katniss can tell that she won’t make it. Thresh turns around with rock in hand, poised before Katniss. He asks Katniss about having an alliance with Rue, and Katniss tells him about their strategy to take out the Careers and Rue’s death. Thresh lets Katniss go, but with the warning that he won’t do it again; they are even.
As Katniss leaves, she sees Cato drop down next to Clove, and beg her to stay with him. Katniss watches Thresh grab Cato’s and his bag befor running away so she guesses that Cato went after Thresh.  Katniss makes it back to the cave, and Katniss manages to take the hypodermic needle and put it in Peeta before going unconcious from her head wound. End of Chapter.

Chapter 22:
The chapter opens with Katniss regains consciousness, and she sees Peeta. She notices that he is healed, and is instantly relieved. She feels her forehead, which was bandaged by Peeta. A storm starts, and that means that the Gamemakers are out to get someone. Katniss says that it is probably for Cato and Thresh. Katniss tells Peeta about the incident with Thresh and Clove. Peeta says that hopefully Cato and Thresh would kill each other, but Katniss doesn’t want Thresh to die even though if he lived then she would die. Katniss breaks down at this point and tell Peeta that she wants to go home, and Peeta promises her that she will. Peeta tells Katniss to go to sleep and that he will wake her up in the afternoon.
When Katniss wakes up, they eat the last little bit of food that they have left to try and calm their hungry stomachs, and look at the sky to see that there is no deaths that day. Peeta tells Katniss that Thresh was hiding in a grain field, and that no one had really wanted to track him down. Katniss starts to think that maybe Thresh is making use ouf of the grain, and that is why he was steal healthy looking at the feast, or maybe he just has really good sponsors. Peeta then wonders aloud what would they have to do to get some bread. Katniss has an idea: her and Peeta need to play up the romance in order to get more food.
Peeta and Katniss kiss again, and this is for real. Neither of them or sick or unconscious.  This is the first kiss that makes Katniss want another one (AWWWWW :D). That night the storm picks up, and the next day is worse. Katniss and Peeta are starving for food, but the weather is preventing them from hunting. Katniss knows that she has to do something worthy of recieving food from a sponsor. Katniss asks Peeta about the interview when he said that he had a cruch on Katniss for a long time. Peeta then precedes to tell her when he knew that he liked her. Katniss let’s her guard down, and has a personal and intimate conversation with Peeta. The Chapter ends with a sponsor sending a feast of fresh rolls, goat cheese, apples, and a tureen of lamb stew.

Chapter 23:
Chapter 23 begins as Katniss and Peeta begin to enjoy a meal sent to them by Haymitch and their sponsors. Their conversation had been interrupted by the arrival of the package and now Peeta picks up where they left off: (Now pay attention this is my favorite part of the whole book and deserves to be quoted:) (P.S. It’s a sweet love scene). Peeta decides to go out, and check the sky for a death toll, and he comes back to report that Thresh is dead. Katniss is very upset over this. If anyone besides her and Peeta won, she wanted it to be Thresh.
“What was that you were saying just before the food arrived?” says Peeta. “Something about me… no competition… best thing that ever happened to you…” Katniss responds, “I don’t remember that last part.” Peeta says, “Oh, that’s right. That’s what I was thinking. Scoot over, I’m freezing.” AWWWWWWWW:D
As they continue to chat in the cave, they realize for the first time how Haymitch managed to win the games. He outsmarted the others! Peeta and Katniss’s time in the cave is a major bonding moment for them as well. They share old stories and discuss their friendship. After the bad weather ends, which was confining them to the cave, they resume hunting for Cato once again. The only problem is that Peeta is a heavy walker and makes a lot of noise as they travel through the forest. This makes it hard for Katniss to hunt for food so they decide to hunt and gather seperately.
After she spends some time hunting Katniss sends a message (a bird whistle) to Peeta which recieves no response. In a moment of panic she runs back to find Peeta gathering berries and almost shoots him with an arrow by accident. In her furry she yells at Peeta for not responding to the signal and for eating some of their food. Just as Peeta denies stealing the food a gong rings and a hovercraft takes foxface’s body. Peeta panics because thinks Cato is near but Katniss realizes the berries he collected are nightlock(deadly) and tells him foxface is his own kill. End of Chapter 23.

Chapter 24:
Chapter 24 begins as Katniss explains to Peeta how he killed Foxface. Peeta then goes to throw away the berries but Katniss decides to save a few in case they can be used to fool Cato as well. Afterwards they cook their meal and begin to discuss where to make camp. Katniss wants to climb a tree, but Peeta wants to return to the cave. Katniss knows this is a bad idea because it will take hours of walking and they will only have to leave in the morning to return to the woods to hunt. Peeta argues, however, that he will be unable to climb a tree with his hurt leg. Katniss gives in because he would do the same for her. They next morning they decide to pack up and head out because today is the day the Gamemakers will make sure they face Cato, but they don’t know how it will be done. As Katniss and Peeta leave the cave they notice all of the water in the streams is gone. It is apparant at this moment that the Gamemakers want them to face Cato at the lake in the center of the arena where there are no trees for protection. So with courage and determination they head straight for the lake.
At the lake they restock with water and wait.When Cato rushes through the trees they pose to fight, but when Katniss shoots him the arrow is deflected by some sort of armor. Next, Cato runs straight past them as they realize he is running FROM something. At that moment in time Katniss sees the creatures and has no other reaction but to save herself.

Chapter 25:
Chapter 25 begins and the creatures are called Muttations. They resemble huge wolves, but have humanlike qualities. They are able to stand easily on just their hind  legs and wave as though they have wrists. As Katniss runs towards the Cornucopia after Cato she remembers Peeta. He is behind her about 15 yards because of his hurt leg. Katniss climbs the cornucopia and kills some of the mutts as Peeta makes his way to safety. At the top of the Cornucopia Cato is overtaken with cramps but asks if the mutts can climb. Katniss and Peeta watch as the mutts assemble and then one takes a running start and jumps onto the Cornucopia. It is unable to hold on and quickly slides off, but Katniss shoots it when she realizes the mutts resemble the other tributes. She explains to Peeta how the eyes, hair, and size all match one of the tributes. The collars also have their District number on them. The next attempt is made by Thresh who pierces Peeta’s leg. Katniss pulls Peeta back to the top of the cornucopia away from the danger of the mutts but Cato then graps Peeta in a headlock. In a sense of emergency Katniss weighs her options. She can shoot Cato in the head but Peeta will fall to the mutts with him, or she can wait but Peeta will die of asphyxiation. In a last attempt Peeta draws an X in blood on Cato’s hand. Katniss catches the signal and immedialetly shoots Cato’s hand. As Cato releases Peeta and stumbles backwards Peeta gives him a last shove which causes him to fall over the edge. Katniss is able to grab Peeta and they both wait to hear a cannon fire which signals the end of the competition.
When the cannon fire fails to come Peeta and Katniss realize they must kill Cato because of his armor. The mutts have turned him into a barely living mound of meat. As Katniss leans over the edge and shoots Cato it is more an act of kindness than of vengeance. The cannon fires immediatley after but there is no announcement of victory. Katniss and Peeta decide to walk to the lake so that the hovercraft can take Cato’s body. Katniss helps Peeta to the lake because by now Peeta has lost a lot of blood from his wound. When they arrive at the lake the body is taken, but instead of an announcement of victory the the speaker (Claudius Templesmith) announces the revoking of the previou provision which  means there can only be ONE victor. In a moment of sadness Katniss and Peeta argue over what to do. Peeta says, “We both know they have to have a victor”, which gives Katniss an idea. She empties a handful of nightlock berries to Peeta and herself.

On the count of three they go to eat the berries when Claudius Templesmith yells stop and announces the victors of the 74th Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. THEY WON!

Chapter 26:
Chapter 26 begins as the hovercraft arrives to take Katniss and Peeta from the arena. Inside the vehicle Peeta falls unconscious but fortunately there are doctors present and ready to operate. Katniss panics when they take her from Peeta and begins banging at the glass door that separates her from Peeta. Obviously she is still in shock from the being in the arena. As Katniss watches Peeta on the surgeon’s table she remembers how whenever Prim and her mom had a patient she would run off to the woods. She could never understand why the family members of the patient would want to stay, but now she realizes you have no choice.
Katniss is put to sleep and she wakes to find herself strapped to a table with tubes running from her right arm. The redheaded avox girl enters to bring Katniss a tray of food. Katniss proceeds to ask the girl if Peeta made it and she nods yes. Katniss is comforted by knowing this and then begins to eat. When Katniss tries to leave the bed she is quickly put to sleep by a liquid that enters the tubes in her arm. The cycle of eating and being put to sleep continues until wakes to find herself free of restraints and tubes. She also finds that all of her scars and wounds have vanished and her skin is flawless. She dresses in an outfit that is the same as what she wore into the arena and prepares to meet her team.
The first person she runs to is Haymitch. He, Effie, and Cinna are all extremely proud of her. Katniss asks where Peeta is and they tell her that the capital wants their first sight of each other to be live on stage. Cinna then takes Katniss to be dressed for the evening’s events. The dress Cinna created is made of a sheer light yellow fabric that ripples by just the slightest movement. The dress gives the illusion of candlelight which still makes Katniss the girl on fire but now she is soft and sweet. When Katniss asks about the dress Cinna says he thought Peeta would like it better. The outfit with flat sandles, loose hair, soft makeup, and a simple dress gives the impression of innocence. Katniss realizes his true motive is not Peeta and knows by the sound of his voice that it is a warning.
Katniss’ suspicion is correct. Before she takes the stage that night, Haymitch hugs Katniss and gives her a message. He says, “Listen up, You’re in trouble. Word is the Capital’s furious about you showing them up in the arena… Your only defense can be you were so madly in love you weren’t responsible for your actions” (Collins 357). The chapter ends as Katniss ponders Haymitches words. He told her he didn’t have to tell Peeta because he was already there (in love). Katniss realizes that her feelings are too complicated and that she hasn’t yet figured out if she really likes him or if she only pretended to as part of the games.

Chapter 27:
Chapter 27 begins as Caesar Flickerman greets the audience before Katniss and Peeta arrive on the stage. Next, Katniss and Peeta see each other for the first time since the arena. Katniss unexpectedly runs into Peeta’s arms. They hug and kiss, which drives the crowd crazy, until they are taken to their seats. Katniss’s thoughts are concerned with whether or not Peeta knows about the danger they’re facing.
Their seat is a small velvet red love seat. Katniss can tell from Haymitch’s expression that she needs to look more “in love.” Therefore, she tucks her feet up behind her on the coach and leans on Peeta’s shoulder. Peeta immedialtely put his arm around her without hesitation, and this is how they watch the 3 hour film clip of the competition. The movie portrays the pre-game events, the arena, and their victory. The movie allows Katniss to see how Peeta used his time with the careers to protect Katniss. He misled them, stayed up the entire night under the tracker jacket tree, and fought off Cato so she could escape. It also shows Katniss’s hysteric reaction on the hovercraft when Peeta undergoes an operation.
After the movie they President Snow of Panem present the crown (1 crown that splits into 2 halves). Next, they arrive at the president’s mansion for the victory banquet and meet all of their sponsors. The next morning they are prepared for their last interviews. Katniss wears a white dress with pink shoes. In the interview they are seated the same way on the love couch as the previous nite. Caesar Flickerman’s interview informs Katniss of Peeta’s artificial leg. Katniss is upset because she feels it is her fault, but Peeta reassures her by saying he would have tied with her using the tourniquet.
Caesar asks Katniss two major questions:
– “When did you realize you were in love with him?” Katniss says when she heard the announce of two tributes being able to win. This is because for the first time she realized they could both live together forever.
– “The moment when you pulled out those berries. What was going on in your mind?” Katniss thinks carefully because her response determines whether or not the capital will punish her for challenging them or just consider her crazy in love. She says, “I don’t know, I just… couldn’t bear the thought of… being without him.” (A perfect response).
On the train ride home Katniss begins to thinks about home. Since she never seriously thought about the chance of returning home, she worries that she has forgotten who she realy is as a person. When the train makes a stop, Haymitch tells them to keep up the act and Peeta and Katniss get into a fight. Peeta is hurt because he realizes Katniss has been acting in love the whole time. Katniss has difficulties determining who she loves, Peeta or Gale. She feels as though she has lied to them both. The story ends when Peeta asks Katniss to pretend to be in love one more time for the cameras, but his voice is hollow. Katniss dreads the moment when she will have to let go of him. End of “The Hunger Games.”

Review The Hunger Games chapter 10-19

Chapter 10- Part 11 “The Games”

Chapter 10 begins as Katniss realizes what has just happened. She is overcome by embarrassment and astonished that Peeta has just given the best interview of anyone with his declaration of love approach. She and Peeta are the only ones the crowd can talk about for the rest of the evening. After the event Katniss rushes back to their rooms and attacks Peeta. Katniss thinks his declaration was an attack to make her look weak, but as Haymitch explains it gave her the best approach there is, “desirable.” He also says that all anyone can talk about is “the star- crossed lovers from District 12.” Then Peeta gets angry because he is jealous of Gale who he thinks is Katniss’s boyfriend. At this point Katniss is completely torn, and she is clearly struggling with an internal conflict over Peeta and Gale. Finally, Katniss realizes her overreaction and apoligizes to Peeta.

That night Peeta and Katniss accidentaly meet on the roof, both unable to sleep. They begin to talk but end in an argument over what they care about. All Peeta wants to do is find a way he can prove he is not just an object for their entertainment, but Katniss doesn’t understand why because she knows they are only objects in the eyes of the capital.

The next morning they are taken to the arena. In the catacombs underneath Cinna prepares Katniss, each tribute wears the same outfit, but by surprise he gives her the mockingjay pin she left on her old clothes. She is thanks Cinna then they prepare for the games to begin. She steps on the plate, rises from darkness to the light of the arena, and hears the announcement to let the 74th Hunger Games begin!

Chapter 11:

Chapter 11 begins as all 24 tributes are standing on their platforms waiting for the games to begin after a 60 second countdown. Katniss looks around and takes in the scenery consisting of a large plain, a drop off, a lake, sparse piney woods. In the center between all of the tributes lie the supplies that each of them can fight to acquire. She knows Haymitch wants her to immediately run into the woods and put as much distance between herself and the others as possible, but she sees a silver bow and arrow lying in the center. She decides to ignore Haymitch and go for the bow. Before the start fires Katniss is distracted by Peeta and misses her quickstart for the bow. Instead, she she goes for a orange backpack full of supplies and fights with a boy from District 9 who is killed by a girl from District 2 with a knife. Katniss realizes the girl will kill her with the next knife so she takes off running for the woods.

The first night Katniss hides in a tree. The anthem and photos of the 11 tributes that died that day are projected in the sky. Katniss is relieved Peeta is still alive and soon falls asleep. However, she is awoken by someone who starts a fire only a few yards away from her. This person is considered a hazard for Katniss because everyone on the hunt now knows exactly where she is located. Even though her location in the tree is still a secret, Katniss is extremely nervous. Surely enough the careers arrive and kill the girl with the fire, but do not notice Katniss in the tree. However, to Katniss’s surprise she hears Peeta’s voice talking among them!

Chapter 12:

Chapter 12 begins with Katniss’s reaction to discovering Peeta working with the Careers. She is still hidden in the tree and overhearing the careers’ converstation. They enter into a disagreement and Peeta walks back to make sure the girl is dead. While he is gone the careers talk about killing him but realize he could help them find Katniss. They are still wondering how she scored an eleven in training which is thanks to Haymitch for telling she and Peeta not to reveal their strengths to everyone. After the careers leave the scene Katniss leaves the tree and heads in the opposite direction looking for water which was the second instruction Haymitch gave them for the arena (1st being to put as much distance between themselves and the other tributes). It takes almost two days for Katniss to find water until the point where she reached complete exaustion. She sets up camp, restocks on food and water, and rests until she is awoken by fire approaching her on all sides!

Chapter 13:

Katniss becomse alert, and starts thinking of ways to escape, realizing that there is no time to pack everythings. She starts running as a forest fire is occuring. She sees all sorts of forest animals going a certain way, so he follows them, but she is not able to keep up with them for long. The smoke from the fire is really starting to affect her so she covers her nose with her shirt.

As Katniss is running she realizes that this was not some accident by a tribute, this was made by the Game-makers to keep the game interesting because nothing exciting had been going on in the arena for in the past few days. Katniss knows that the fire is designed to bring all the tributes together.  Katniss stops under a stone covering, and she starts vomiting from the smoke of the fire.  Katniss leaves the cave, and is attacked by fire balls. The attacks finally start to cease, and Katniss collapses exhausted and in pain. Katniss’ leg catches on fire, and as she is putting it out she thinks of the now ironic phrase “Katniss, the girl who was on fire.”

The smoke is still too thick to climb a tree, so Katniss limps away to find cover. Katniss fines relief in a spring, and revels in the cool water. Katniss musters up the courage to look at her injury, and almost faints at the sight.  She eats and refills her water bottle, and climbs a tree to rest.

Katniss wakes up to the Career’s foot steps and starts running. She is able to make it up a tree in time before the Careers catch her and they are unable to climb up and get her because they weigh to much. Katniss makes polite conversation with the Careers. Cato from District 2 trys to climb the tree, but breaks the branch and falls. Glimmer from District 1 tries to scale the tree, but realizes that she is too heavy; she tries to shoot Katniss with a bow, but sucks at aiming.

The Careers decide to camp out by the tree that Katniss is in to wait for morning. The Chapter ends with Katniss identifiying Rue, and her pointing to something above Katniss’ head…….! 

Chapter 14:

Katniss looks above her head, and about 15 feet up, and sees a wasp nest. Katniss surmises that they are probably tracker jackets. These are killer wasps made by the Capital: they are larger than normal wasps,” solid gold body, and a sting that raises a lump the size of a plum on contact” (Collins 185). Multiple stings usually kill a person, and if you survive you suffer from hallucinations by the venom in the sting; these wasps are killers who will hunt you down if you were to disturb them.

Katniss comes up with a plan to drop the nest down on the Careers. But there are many stipulations to this plan, she would have to cut down the whole tree in order to bring the nest down, and would the cutting of the tree arouse the trakcer jackets? Katniss decides to saw the tree during the anthem, so she prepares and waits…

The Anthem of the Capital begins as the sky lights up, and Katniss starts furiously cutting. The music ends as the sky darkens, and Katniss is not finished sawing through the tree, so she waits till dawn. Katniss goes back to her original spot on the tree, and is suprised by a pot that is connected to a silver parachute.This is her first gift from a sponsor! She cautiously opens the lid and finds ointment that helps her burns on her hand and legs.

Dawn is approaching, and Katniss is up and alert. She eats a small meal then ans sees the Careers still sleeping. Before she starts sawing again, she alerts Rue of her plan as a warning to leave. Katniss starts cutting faster when she notices the tracker Jackets starting to wake up. She shoves the end of the branch far away from her and it crashes down to the ground, and the nest opens up. The furious tracker jackets come out for revenge. Katniss is stung a three times, but fortunately manages to escape. The Careers run in panic towards the lake, but Glimmer and a girl from District 4 do not make it our alive.

Katniss realizes that she can now obtain the bow from Glimmer since she is dead, and Katniss retrieves th bow from the once beautiful, but now disfigured girl. Two cannons fire for the two girls. She hears footsteps coming for her, and Peeta stumbles through the bushes, Katniss trys to shoot him with an arrow, but the hallucenations are just too much. Peeta orders her to run.

The chapter ends with Katniss having a horrid hallucenation about ants.

Chapter 15:

Katniss wakes up to find herself locked in a fetal position. She remembers Peeta saving her life before she had collapsed, and she starts to rethink her original thoughts about which side Peeta is on. She wonders what Gale thinks of this incident.

Katniss is happy to have the bow and arrows because this gives her a huge advantage. Katniss realizes how hydrated she is, and searches for water. She assessed her injuries: she has three stings, burns, and bruises. She finds a shallow stream. She washes up a bit, and by noon she built a fire and had a bird for dinner. While tending to the fire, she hears a twig snap, so he readys her bow and arrow. She realizes that it is just Rue, so she lowers her weapon. 

Rue and Katniss decide to form an alliance; Katniss gives Rue some food, and Rue in return tends to Katniss’ sting; sucking the poison out using a leaf. Rue reminds Katniss of Prim, and that makes Katniss want Rue as an ally even more.  Rue and Katniss both settle into a tree for the night; they talk for a little bit.

Katniss and Rue devise a plan to take out the Careers by taking out their food supplies. End of Chapter.

Chapter 16:

Katniss and Rue are now in a trusted alliance together. Katniss ponders on how to take out the Careers. She knows that taking away their food supplies will weaken them greatly. Katniss decides to strategize more in the morning and falls asleep next to Rue.

The sound of the dreaded cannon startles Katniss awake the next morning.  Rue and Katniss both wonder  who it was, but figure that they will find out tonight. They devise a plan, which involves Rue setting random camp fires to distract the Careers, she sings a song that to Katniss, and they will communicate through the mockingjays, so Katniss will be able to know if Rue is okay. Katniss goes in an opposite direction to spy on the camp from a different direction.

She makes to the camp and is cover by thick bushes. There are four tributes; she notices the unmemorable boy from District 3. Katniss sees the empty Cornicupia, and then spots the Career’s supplies piled neatly in a pyramid. Katniss notices that the set up of their camp is very odd.  Caton points to one of the camp fires that Rue set up, and they arm themselves to leave. Katniss over hears them talking about Peeta, and how Cato wounded him.

After they leave, Katniss is still trying to figure out how to get to the supplies. But then she sees Foxface come out of the woods, sees that it is safe, runs for the pyramid and before she reaches the circle of supplies, then puts her foot in a specific spot. She then hops towards the pyramid. As Katniss watches Foxface, she realizes that she was right about the booby trap, but more complex than she thought. Their are mines all around the supplies that could destroy the invader with just one wrong move.

Katniss comes up with another plan, and shoots an arrow into a bag of apples. The chapter ends with Katniss being blown back from the booby trap explosions.

Chapter 17:

Chapter 17 begins as the ground continues to shake from the explosion. Katniss realizes her plan to destroy the careers’ supplies has worked. As she tries to escape the scene she realizes the explosion caused more damage to her than she thought. Her left ear is defened and she is dizzy, but she knows the consequences if she doesn’t escape. Somehow she works up enough strength to crawl into a nearby bush where she is completely hidden from view.

 Cato’s reaction is beyond anything reasonable. He grabs at his hair, beats the ground with his fists, and then kills the boy from District 3 with his bare hands because it was his job to protect their supplies. Katniss is nervous because now she knows the fiercest career is out to get her and she is currently confined to hiding in a bush.

Katniss watches the boy from District 3 be taken by a hovercraft and the careers leave to go hunt. She decides not to leave her hiding place because she is currently as safe as she can be while injured. In the bush Katniss has plenty time to think. She realizes how long it has been since anyone from District 12 has made it to the top 8.

The next morning she wakes up to find Foxface looking through the rubbage of the Career’s supplies. For a moment she considers adding Foxface as her ally, but reconsiders because there is something to sneaky about her. After leaving the bush she visits her and Rue’s meeting place, but Rue is not there. As Katniss waits, she decides to climb a tree because its too dangerous on the ground. After a long wait she visits the site where the 3rd fire should have been lit, but she realizes it has not and knows something went wrong. This is when Katniss hears Rue’s mockingjay song and is relieved until she hears Rue screaming her name. When Katniss arrives at the scene, Rue is caught in a net and then suddenly shot with a spear.  7 tributes left.

Chapter 18:

Chapter 18 begins as Katniss immediately shoots the boy from District 1 who speared Rue. Katniss then frees Rue from the net and consoles her. Rue’s last words tell Katniss to make sure she wins, and then asks Katniss to sing her a song.

Katniss leaves quietly, and comes up with an idea to show the Capital that they don’t own her. She picks some wildflowers from the woods, and decorates Rue’s body; placing them around her face and in her hair. Katniss presses her three fingers to her lips then holds them out to Rue.

Katniss is about to make camp in a tree when a silver parachute full of bread from District 11 descends from the sky, and Katniss openly thanks them. Katniss wakes up the next morning, and realizes that her food is running low and she needs to hunt. Katniss finds some goose and purposely lights a fire to cook it because she wants to lure Cato in. As Katniss is cooking the goose, she starts to think that she might actually have a chance at winning now.

Katniss decides to go replenish her water, and as she is doing so she realizes that the boy from District 1 was her first kill. Today was an ueventful day for the Games, so Katniss knows that something big will probably happen soon.

That night Claudis Templesmith’s voice booms down, congratulating the remaining tributes, and he also says that there has been a change to the rules. This huge because there really aren’t any rules, except for not stepping off your plate until 60 seconds or cannibalism.

The New Rule: “Both Tributes from the same district will be declared winners if they are the last two alive” (Collins 244). The chapte ends with Katniss calling out Peeta’s name.

Chapter 19:

 Katniss now realizes that her new ally is a wounded Peeta, and she does not know where he is. This is good for Katniss and Peeta’s star-crossed lovers ploy because they will probably gain more sponsors. Katniss thinks that this is also the reason that the rules have changed in the game; Peeta was playing the angle. Katniss has this huge epiphany, which is that everything that Peeta has done in the games is to protect her. (By the way: the only people who benefit from this rule change is District 2 and District 12).Katniss decides to look for Peeta in the morning, but to get some sleep for tonight.

The next day, Katniss is dedicated to finding Peeta. She knows that he is wounded, and he can’t survive without water so she assumes that he is hiding some where near water. Katniss finds the water spot where she thinks that Peeta is and just as she breaks the surface she hears a voice:

“‘You here to finish me off, sweetheart?’ ….My [Katniss] peruse the bank, but there’s nothing. Just mud, the plants, the base of rocks” (Collins 252).

Katniss calls out for Peeta because she can recognize his voice, but she can’t see him. She walks along the bank then hears his voice again: “Well, don’t step on me” (Collins 252). Katniss looks down and spots Peeta’s blue eyes open in the brown mud and green leaves. As Katniss helps Peeta out of his awesome hiding place, he jokes around with her, which makes Katniss glad that he still has his sense of humor.

Katniss props Peeta on a rock next to the stream so that she can tend to his wounds.  Katniss digs through her supplies and gives him something to reduce his temperature. Katniss realizes how sick Peeta is when he denies food, and even scrunches his nose to it. Katniss then takes a look at Peeta’s thigh where Cato had cut him, and realizes how bad it really is. She cleans the wound then patches it up, and as she does this Peeta makes light humorous conversation with her (very cute!!!). Katniss decides that they need to move because they are in a very open spot. Peeta can barely move, but they are able to make it to a cave.

Peeta starts talking about not making it, and possibly dying, but Katniss doesn’t want to hear so she impusivley kisses him. This is Katniss’ first kiss!!!! Katniss steps out of the cave just as a parachute lands on the ground, and Katniss ipens it; hoping to find medicine, but instead hot broth. Katniss realizes that just one kiss gives her a pot of soup, so she needs to step it up. The Chapter ends with Katniss steping up the Romance between her and Peeta by kissing him awake.
